Building Resilient Power Networks for Critical Institutions
Sterlite Electric reimagined the city’s power backbone with underground networks and GIS technology, ensuring uninterrupted power for vital healthcare and governance hubs—powering people, not just grids.
Project: 132/33 kV, 2×50 MVA GIS Substation at SMS Hospital, Jaipur. This included associated transmission lines, underground HV cable systems, and terminal bays
When Jaipur’s two most critical institutions, Rajasthan Vidhan Sabha and SMS Hospital faced frequent power risks, the city needed more than a technical fix. It needed a resilient grid built for reliability and safety. Sterlite Electric built a network that made the city's critical power supply unbreakable.
Challenge: Fragile Power Line
In the heart of the city, the SMS Stadium substation powered key civic and healthcare zones but was depended on just two external feeders with no internal redundancy.
That meant any fault could disrupt power to:
The Vidhan Sabha, Jaipur’s legislative nerve centre
The SMS Stadium and adjoining residential clusters
And most critically, the SMS Hospital, where the new IPD Tower required an uninterrupted, high-load power supply for patient care
Further, spatial limitations and an absolute ban on overhead infrastructure added more complexity to the challenge. As the city’s healthcare and governance demand surged, ensuring reliable, round-the-clock power became a strategic imperative.
Solution: Reimagining Jaipur’s Intracity Power Network
Working with Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Limited (RRVPNL), we delivered a comprehensive intra-city grid modernization transforming it into a future-ready, resilient grid through strategic underground infrastructure.
Our key interventions
New Intra-City Power Link: Built a high-capacity underground power link between SMS Stadium, SMS Hospital, and Jawahar Nagar, creating a 3-node network that reduced dependency and improved flexibility.
Capacity Upgrade: Enhanced transmission capacity from 630A to 1200A, ensuring continuous power for critical healthcare infrastructure.
Dedicated GIS Substation: Constructed within SMS Hospital to directly support the new IPD Tower’s energy demand.
Stakeholder Alignment & Coordination: Coordinated seamlessly with SMS Medical College, urban authorities, and local representatives to enable smooth disruption free execution in a complex environment.
Smart City Integration: Shifted all power flow to underground cabling, improving reliability while maintaining Jaipur’s visual and environmental aesthetics.
The Impact
This strategic upgrade didn’t just power a hospital. It fortified Jaipur’s civic and healthcare backbone.
Transformation | Impact | Header 3 |
|---|---|---|
2 feeders → 3-node interconnected network | Eliminated single-point failure and improved redundancy | Cell 1-3 |
Load upgraded from 630A → 1200A | Doubled power capacity for expansion | Cell 2-3 |
Underground HV cabling | Safer, sustainable, and Smart City compliant | |
Dedicated GIS Substation | 24×7 power for SMS Hospital IPD Tower | |
Multi-stakeholder coordination | Seamless execution in a sensitive zone |
The project was featured across regional news outlets and print media for its contribution to Jaipur’s grid resilience and Smart City journey.
<Coverage Snapshot>
This project exemplifies how strategic engineering and collaborative execution can transform a city’s infrastructure backbone enabling growth, resilience, and sustainability in one of India’s fastest-evolving urban hubs. By delivering reliability where it matters most, that is the healthcare, governance, and community wellbeing, we’re not just powering Jaipur. We’re powering trust in the city’s future.
